Cambridge B2 First vs IELTS: Which Certification Holds Up Longer?

Cambridge B2 First (formerly FCE) and IELTS at band 5.5–6.5 both certify CEFR B2. But they're built for different purposes: lifelong certificate vs. high-stakes admissions snapshot. Here's how to choose based on your timeline.

Cambridge · B2 First · FCE · IELTS

1. The fundamental difference

Cambridge B2 First: a certificate that never expires. Used by individuals, employers and many institutions in Europe and Latin America as proof of B2 attainment.

IELTS B2: a 2-year-validity score report. Used predominantly for visas and admissions decisions where institutions want a recent assessment.

Both certify the same CEFR level. But their value over time is different.

2. Format comparison

3. The Use of English section

This is what makes Cambridge B2 First distinctive. The "Use of English" section tests grammar in context: cloze, key word transformations, word formation. There's no IELTS equivalent.

If you have strong grammar instincts, this section is points you can lock down with little extra practice. If grammar is weak, this section can disproportionately hurt your overall band.

5. Choosing based on your goal

Choose B2 First when:

  • You want a certificate you can list on your CV for life
  • Your target country is in continental Europe or Latin America
  • You're not racing a specific application deadline
  • Your English is stable at B2 and you'll keep using it

Choose IELTS when:

  • You have an upcoming UK / US / Australia visa or admission deadline
  • The institution lists IELTS specifically
  • You're testing for a near-term move; the 2-year validity is fine
  • You may retake within 2 years if your score drops

6. The cost angle

Lifetime valueHigh (one investment)Medium (resets every 2 years)

For lifelong CV value, B2 First is the better investment.

7. The 6-week prep difference

If you have stable B2 grammar:

  • B2 First: 60–80 hours of focused prep. The Use of English section adds about 15 hours of grammar drilling.
  • IELTS Band 6.5: 50–60 hours of focused prep. Vocabulary breadth (academic / general) is the main lift.

Both within reach in 6–8 weeks at 60 min/day.

8. The compound case

Many serious English learners take both:

  • B2 First for the lifelong certificate
  • IELTS for any specific deadline

The prep overlaps about 70%. The 30% specific work is on the unique sections (Use of English for Cambridge, integrated writing for IELTS).
